Donetsk, Nov 15 — DAN. The honorary title of the Russian Federation “Town of Military Glory” has been awarded to Mariupol in the Donetsk People’s Republic and Melitopol in the Zaporozhye region. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Decrees No 827 and 827 awarding the honorifics were published on the official website of legal information on Tuesday.
“The ‘Town of Military Glory’ honorary title is awarded to Mariupol for courage, endurance and mass heroism shown by town defenders in the fight for the freedom and independence of the Fatherland, ” said “Decree No 827 signed earlier in the day. Decree No 828 uses similar wording to award the honorific to Melitopol.
Putin’s Decree No 829 awards the title of “Town of Labor Valor” to Gorlovka, Lugansk and another seven Russian towns for their residents' large contribution to achieving victory in the Great Patriotic War, ensuring uninterrupted production of civil and military goods and heroic labor and dedication.
Earlier in the day, Putin chaired a meeting of the “Pobeda” organizing committee via video link to discuss the awarding of honorifics to Russian towns, including those in new regions. The recommendations to award honorary titles to new towns were presented by President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov. He called for awarding the title of “Town of Military Glory” to Mariupol and “Town of Labor Valor” to Gorlovka. Previously, this initiative was brought forward by DPR authorities.
“The requests (of new Russian regions — eds Donetsk News Agency) for receiving high status underscores the commonness of our historical memory and the unity of historical space, ” Putin said in the course of the meeting.
Mariupol is the largest city on the Sea of Azov coast, a key Donbass metallurgy center and seaport. It was founded in 1779. Mariupol sustained serious damage during the fighting; it was liberated from Ukrainian troops on April 21, 2022.
Gorlovka had been the third largest town in the DPR before the liberation of Mariupol. It was founded in 1779. The town has been on the frontline since 2014 suffering artillery attacks by Kiev forces nearly every day.*jk
