Donetsk, Jun 7 — DAN. People’s Front volunteers from the Donetsk People’s Republic and Kherson and Zaporozhye regions have begun to distribute humanitarian aid to residents of Novaya Kakhovka which was inundated after the Kakhovka Dam burst, an official told the Donetsk News Agency on Wednesday.
“Today, a People’s Front team tried to visit the towns of Alyoshki and Golaya Pristan, but regrettably, they were unable to; all the town areas are flooded and can only be reached by boat, ” People’s Front Regional Executive Committee Head Yevgeny Melnikov said. “They are now back in Novaya Kakhovka distributing relief supplies to the townsfolk, jointly with the Zaporozhye district executive committee.”
The basic supplies sought by local residents include water, children’s kits, diapers, baby food and hygiene kits. Volunteers plan to provide humanitarian aid to hospitals and kindergartens in the near future.
On Tuesday, People’s Front activists from the DPR and Kherson region went to inundated areas to provide assistance and assess the population’s needs. Ukrainian forces shelled Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant facilities overnight to June 6 damaging dam gates. It caused uncontrollable release of water which began to flood riverfront areas downstream the Dnieper. Partial evacuation of the population from the flood zone is underway.*jk
