Mariupol, May 8 — DAN. A monument to tram will be put up near next to the Mariupol city tram depot, public transport officials told the Donetsk News Agency.

A snow removal tram manufactured in the 1960s which is currently standing on unused tracks will be given a second life, as a monument, the depot administration said adding that the vehicle would be taken to a Russian region for restoration.  No project dates have been named.

On May 2, President Vladimir Putin gave the go-ahead to resume tram traffic in Mariupol via video link. The city tram service had not operated since the winter of 2022 as transport infrastructure had been damaged during hostilities.

The snow removal trams were the most widespread utility vehicles in USSR tram depots. They were produced by the Gorky car repair plant from 1948 to 1976.  The GS-5 series to which the Mariupol vintage tram belongs was produced from the 1960s to the 1970s. The tram frame is a rectangular trapezoid with unshielded undercarriage. It has sweeping and scraping attachments mounted to the side and a hydraulic cylinder to lift the rotating brush.*jk
