Donetsk, Dec 20 – DAN. The doctors of Donetsk Territorial Medical Unity have performed a very complicated brain aneurysm surgery, the press service of the DPR Health Ministry said.
"A unique surgery has been performed in Donetsk Territorial Medical Unity, a brain aneurysm repair on a 32-year-old patient diagnosed with intracranial aneurysm. To prevent a rupture, doctors had to stop the blood-flow. The surgery is performed with platinum spiral coils inserted into brain through femoral artery."
As the neurosurgery unit dean Konstantin Kardash explained, the spirals fill the aneurysm cavity to occlude it from the blood-flow. One spiral coil costs about 1,000 USD, though the surgery was free for the patient from the DPR.
"Such surgeries may be performed without expensive spiral coils, but it requires open surgery, trepanation, which is more complicated and dangerous. Brain aneurysm is usually an early-diagnosed congenital condition. This patient had 10 spiral coils placed within the artery," he said.
A brain aneurysm occurs when an area of the artery that supplies blood to the brain weakens or bulges, and fills with blood. The aneurysm rupture causes bleeding into the brain which results in stroke, brain damage or death. Aneurysm treatment requires state-of-the art equipment and methods. *ot
