Donetsk, Dec 27 — DAN. The Donetsk People’s Republic Supreme Court has given a jail term in absentia to a Ukrainian artillery battalion commander who issued orders to shell villages outside Mariupol in the spring of 2022, Russia’s Investigative Committee (SK) reported on Wednesday.
Lieutenant-Colonel Vladimir Torshin was found guilty of cruel treatment of civilians, use of banned methods in armed conflict, hate murder and malicious damage to property, the SKJ said.
In the period from late February — early March 2022, he ordered his subordinates to deliver strikes at the settlements of Zaichenko, Sakhanka, Dzerzhinskoye, Sartana and Talakovka. 36th Marine Brigade servicemen fired at least 15 fragmentation rounds at residential neighborhoods killing a youth and wounding a woman. Forty-two homes and two cars were damaged or destroyed.
The court sentenced Torshin to 28 years in a maximum security prison and put him on the international wanted list.
The DPR Supreme Court earlier passed sentenced in absentia on Ukrainian servicemen Yevgeny Poptsov and Mikhail Izotov who were among the suspects in this case.*jk
