Makeyevka, Jul 4 - DAN. Students and Scientists at Donetsk National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture presented an autonomous water supply project to DPR head Alexander Zakharchenko, as a contingency plan in the event of Ukraine’s cutting off water supply to the Republic.

“We have to be ready for the situation in which LPR now finds itself where Ukrainian authorities cut off water supply,” Zakharchenko said. “To avoid it, we need to have alternative water supply sources; that is why we’re developing this system.”

The alternative water supply scheme was presented to the head of state at the Academy’s hydraulics and pumping equipment laboratory. The project envisions replacement of the Severskiy Donets water basin feed with coalmine water, groundwater, rainwater and meltwater.

“I liked the project; water supply is a topical issue in the Republic, because the blockade is ongoing and the drinking water source is not under our control,” Zakharchenko said.

Donbass water supply has been an acute humanitarian issue since the beginning of the armed conflict in the region. Severskiy Donets canal is the only source of drinking water for DPR residents. The canal repeatedly came under Ukrainian army fire which damaged water supply infrastructure.

In the latest incidents Ukrainian army shelled Donetsk Water Treatment Plant and the Yuzhnodonbasskiy water duct pumping station causing water supply problems to residents on both sides of the contact line. *jk
