Donetsk, Dec 12 - DAN. About 10,500 apartment houses and single family homes in Donetsk were damaged in Donbass fighting, acting city administration head Alexey Kulemzin said on Tuesday.

“As of today, some 8,000 single family homes are damaged in Donetsk; about 1,000 of them are beyond repair,” Kulemzin said.

On top of that, about 2,500 apartment houses were damaged in the DPR capital during the war.

The figures were cited at a “round table” meeting between People’s Council deputies and city administration officials over interaction in ensuring Donetsk life support and amenities for the population.

Donetsk was founded in 1869. Before the Donbass conflict, it was the second most significant city in the former Ukraine, and a sport, cultural, and financial and industrial centre. In 2014, Donetsk residents supported resistance to the government overthrow in Kiev and established the Donetsk People’s Republic.

Ukrainian army units first shelled Donetsk on 26 May 2014. The strikes were delivered at Donetsk airport area. Fifty to 100 people were killed on the first day of shelling; half off them were civilians. Ukrainian forces have been regularly shelling the city and adjacent areas since. *jk
