Donetsk, Jun 10 – DAN. DPR archeologists have discovered a 300-million-year-old fossil flora in the Shakhterskiy district.

The press service of the Donetsk Republican Local History Museum detailed the finding saying that the Stigmaria form taxon of a Lepidodendrales plant had been discovered during an expedition to the Shakhterskiy district.

Close examination revealed that this primitive, vascular plant grew approximately 359-299 million years ago when this flora was abundant in this area.

After a number of additional tests the fossil will be exhibited in the museum's geology and paleontology section.

Lepidodendrales thrived during the Carboniferous period, and some reached heights of 30 meters. The plants developed a branching rooting organ, anchoring it in shallow soil. The stems are notable for their snake-like bark formed by leaf-scars growing in a distinctive diamond-shaped pattern.*ot
