Donetsk, Dec 27 — DAN. The Solovyanenko Donetsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre plans to hold an arts festival in April 2024, Theatre Director General Yevgeny Denisenko told the Donetsk News Agency.

“We plan to hold the first opera and ballet art festival in the homeland of great Russian composer Sergey Prokofiev in April, with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives, ” Denisenko said adding that the Theatre had received a 16-million-ruble grant for the event.

Leading ballet and opera theatres are expected to participate in the project, including the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres. The Russian Ballet will present the Jester and Peter and the Wolf, the Voronezh Theater will show the Cinderella ballet while the Mariinsky Theatre will show “Romeo and Juliet,” according to the Fund for Cultural Initiatives.

The Donetsk Theatre plans to prepare a choreographic suite for a part of Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky cantata.

 The festival program includes lectures, master classes and a round-table discussion.

Donetsk has hosted the World Ballet Stars festival for more than two decades. It was held for the first time in the Yunost Youth Palace in 1994. Later on, the event gained international status and the festival  venue was moved to Donbass Opera. Famous ballet stars were among festival participants including Anastasia Volochkova, Nikolai Tsiskaridze and Shoko Nakamura. The previous festival was held in 2017 and involved performers from Russia, Belarus, Bulgaria and South Korea.*jk
