Donetsk, Feb 7 - DAN. The law cementing the course towards joining NATO and the EU in the Ukrainian Constitution humiliates people in the country, Donetsk People’s Republic Foreign Minister Natalia Nikonorova said on Thursday evening.
“The law passed by Verkhovnaya Rada (parliament) directly contradicts the basic document for independence of the Ukrainian state, namely the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine,” Nikonorova said. “Article 9 of the Declaration states that Ukraine is “a permanently neutral state that does not participate in military blocs.”
The adopted law is “absolutely humiliating for the whole Ukraine and Ukrainian people. NATO does not even consider Ukraine’s possible membership,” the DPR diplomat said. “Consequently, the Fundamental Law fixes the drive to keep on “knocking on the closed door.”
On February 7, the Ukrainian parliament approved the amendments to the Constitution cementing the country’s ambitions to join the EU and NATO. The preamble of the Constitution will now contain the wording on the Ukrainian people's European identity and the irreversibility of the European and Euro-Atlantic course of Ukraine. Article 102 of the Fundamental Law will be amended to vest the president with the power to be the “guarantor of the implementation of the strategic course of the state for acquiring full-fledged membership of Ukraine in the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.”*jk
