Saur-Mogila is originally an ancient tumulus (kurgan) dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. In modern times, it is a strategic height in the Donets ridge. During World War II, Saur-Mogila was a place of intense fighting, and Soviet troops managed to retake control of it from occupying German forces in August 1943. A memorial with a 36-meter-high obelisk and a sculpture of a Soviet Warrior was opened here in 1963 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Saur-Mogila. During the war of 2014, the memorial was badly damaged. *ot
