Donetsk, Jul 26 — DAN. The Uglegorsk thermal power plant has been liberated from Ukrainian armed formations, Svetlodarsk authorities said on Tuesday.

“We congratulate Svetlodarsk residents and all residents of the Donetsk People’s Republic on this truly historic event for us, ” Town Hall said on its Telegram channel. “We are deeply grateful to our fighters for the liberation of the local economic mainstay, one of the largest thermal power plants in Europe.”

Reports on Monday said the Novoluganskoye settlement and the Uglegorsk CHP plant outside Svetlodarsk were being cleared of Ukrainian forces. Earlier on Tuesday, Debaltsevo mayor Igor Zakharevich told the Donetsk News Agency that the CHP plant was under DPR forces operational control but that the mop-up operation against the enemy was ongoing.

The Uglegorsk thermal power plant, one of the largest in Europe, can generate up to 3,600 megawatt of electricity. The facility is located some three kilometers from the Svetlodarsk satellite town and the settlements of Mironovsky and Novoluganskoye. Svetlodarsk is situated 18 kilometers north of Debaltsevo and finds itself within its responsibility zone.

Zakharevich said the liberation of the CHP plant will contribute to stable electricity supply to the Republic which will be able to sell electricity by joining the common power grid (of the DPR, LPR and Russia — eds Donetsk News Agency). *jk
