Donetsk, May 17 - DAN. Ukrainian armed formations fired nearly 180 rounds of ammunition at Donetsk People’s Republic areas within a day causing new civilian casualties and damage.
Military situation
Ukrainian gunmen opened fire at the DPR territory at 05:40. The enemy delivered the first strike at Donetsk’s Kuibyshevsky district expending six 122mm artillery rounds. Ukrainian forces then fired at the DPR capital’s Petrovsky district, Alexandrovka, Lozovoye, Yelenovka, Dokuchayevsk and Yasinovataya on the Donetsk axis and Panteleimonovka, Shakhta Gagarina and the Komsomolets neighborhood on the Gorlovka axis.
The enemy used “Grad” multiple rocket launchers, 152mm and 122mm artillery, 120mm and 82mm mortars and grenade launchers.
A 53-year-old Gorlovka resident was wounded in the shelling; she was admitted to hospital in the condition of medium severity. The shelling also damaged a house and a garage cooperative and left about 5,000 Gorlovka customers without electricity. In Yasinovataya, a 83-year-old resident was wounded. Four houses and the buildings of School No 1 and a vocational training college were damaged.
Reports on Tuesday said that 256 Ukrainian gunmen had surrendered at the “Azovstal” plant in Mariupol. The wounded are receiving the needed medical help. The surrender is ongoing. Meanwhile, the State Duma lower house of the Russian parliament called for adopting a law prohibiting the exchange of Nazi criminals.
The evacuation of the population continues due to the tense humanitarian situation in the city. As many as 544 people including 74 children left Mariupol within a day.

Residents of Volnovakha who had fled the fighting are beginning to return to the town. Some 4,000 people have returned since Volnovakha was liberated from Ukrainian forces. At present, it has a population of 11,000, or 50 percent of pre-war level.
Russia’s Samara region and Snezhnoye in eastern DPR will sign an agreement on join actions on socio-economic development of the region. Samara region specialists will help repair roads and solve water supply problems.
The Russian Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media Ministry and DPR and LPR mobile operators are discussing roaming issues.
DPR Head Denis Pushilin and Republic’s residents venerated the memory of “Pyatnashka” international brigade commander, DPR Hero Oleg Mamiyev (callsign “Mamai”) who was killed in action four years ago. A remembrance ceremony was held at the Alley of Heroes next to the Monument to Donbass Liberators in central Donetsk on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, DPR ombudswoman Darya Morozova said that more than 100 graves of Ukrainian armed formations gunmen had been found in the DPR since the beginning of the special operation.
