Donetsk, Mar 1 — DAN. More than 100 apartment buildings and single family homes in Svetlodarsk have been damaged by Ukrainian artillery strikes since last May, town mayor Maxim Kozlovsky told the Donetsk News Agency on Wednesday.
“Artillery strikes at the town since May 2022 have damaged 41 homes in a single family neighborhood and smashed windows of 45 apartment buildings, ” Kozlovsky said. “Eleven apartment buildings took direct hits.”
A culture center, a hotel, a restaurant, a kindergarten and hospital utility structures have been ruined by shelling. Windows were smashed in three schools, three kindergartens, a sport center and a youth center, he added.
Svetlodarsk is located 18 kilometers north of Debaltsevo. It was founded in 1968. The town accommodates the Uglegorskaya thermal power plant, one of the largest in Europe. On April 29, 2014, a rally in the town adopted a resolution in support of the Donetsk People’s Republic independence referendum. Ukrainian troops occupied the town in the summer of 2014. The town was liberated from Ukrainian armed formations in late May 2022.*jk
