Donetsk, Mar 26 - DAN. The Donetsk region will face a full-scale environmental disaster in case of power cutoffs at the key facilities of the Severskiy Donetsk – Donbass (SDD) canal, Donetsk People’s Republic Construction and Public Utilities Minister Sergey Naumets said at a press briefing at the Donetsk News Agency on Tuesday.
“If the SDD canal water treatment and pumping stations are cut off from electricity, customers on both sides of the contact line will be left without water supply. Power cutoffs are inadmissible under any circumstances,” Naumets said. “It is fraught with environmental disaster for the whole Donetsk region with water shortages affecting millions of people.”
Earlier reports said the Voda Donbassa water supply company had been notified about energy supply disconnection due to an outstanding debt.
The Severskiy Donets - Donbass canal is the key water supply source in the region operating for residents on both sides of the contact line. Ukrainian forces repeatedly shelled stretches of the canal causing water supply interruptions and damaging vital DPR infrastructure.*jk*pp
