Donetsk, Jan 15 - DAN. Donetsk People’s Republic leader Denis Pushilin said that the DPR militia’s victory at Donetsk’s S.Prokofyev airport was a symbol of the Republic’s residents’ drive for the independence of the country.
“Four years ago, after days of bloody fighting, we recaptured the airport. It not just a strategically important victory but also a symbol of our fighters’ resolve and our residents’ indomitable will in the struggle for freedom and independence,” Pushilin said on the anniversary of the date marking the airport’s transfer under the DPR control.
He expressed the hope that it would be restored after the war as a monument perpetuating the militia heroes’ feat.
“We remember the fighters of Sparta, Somalia, Republican Guard, Vostok Brigade and many other units which effectively shielded the peaceful Donetsk from the Ukrainian aggressor,” the DPR Head said.
The Kiev army attacked the Donetsk airport area on May 26, 2014. Several dozen militiamen and airport personnel died in the fight. The next day, Ukrainian National Guard gunmen attacked the capital and seized the airport terminals. The DPR militia recaptured the Donetsk airport on January 15, 2015.*jk
