Donetsk, Jun 2 - DAN. Donetsk People’s Republic environmentalists plan to launch two new nature sanctuaries and a state reserve, chairman of the State Committee on Environmental Policy and Natural Resources Roman Kishkan said at a press briefing on Tuesday.
“We have plans to establish several nature conservation areas: the Paleorif near Starobeshevo (in southern DPR - eds Donetsk News Agency), the site of a Carbonic period sea, and the Amvrosiyevka area (eastern DPR - eds DAN) which was also covered by the ancient sea (Tethys) for 32 million years; over time, it piled up a wealth of sediments,” Kishkan said. “This is where we plan to establish the Amvroseyvka Cretaceous Isolate reserve.”
Another future nature conservation area is the Sokolikha Hill in the vicinity of Torez (east of the Republic); it will include an ancient hornbeam forest. “It appeared here during the interglacial period some 100,000 years ago. It’s unique because it is natural, not man-made, i.e. it has survived since those ancient times,” he said.
The DPR currently has 44 nature conservation areas.*jk
