Donetsk, Jun 22 – DAN. DPR has chosen the Elenovka-Novotroitsk checkpoint for opening as it is equipped with everything necessary for comfortable cross-border travel, said DPR Ombudswoman Daria Morozova.
"This checkpoint is well-equipped, it has high capacity," she explained.
The opening was a forces measure as Ukraine has been refusing a discussion over humanitarian corridors across the contact line for months. DPR sent five letters with suggestions on bilateral reopening of the checkpoints in a week, as well as a notice on reopening of the Elenovka-Novotroitsk checkpoint.
There are currently four checkpoints for pedestrian and motor traffic between Ukraine and the Donetsk People’s Republic: Elenovka-Novotroitsk (southwest of Donetsk, southern direction), Mayorsk-Mayorskoye (outside Gorlovka, northern direction), Oktyabr-Gnutovo (DPR south, southern direction) and Aleksandrovka-Maryinka (west of Donetsk, western direction), though they remain closed.
Kiev unilaterally reopened Maryinka on June 9. Donetsk later decided to partially reopen the traffic at one of the checkpoints.
It remains unclear whether Elenovka is operating at the Ukrainian side. In this connection, Donetsk warns people, to postpone travelling unless there is an urgent need. Media reported that Ukrainian border guards, SBU members and local authorities are preparing to reopen Elenovka-Novotroitsk. *ot
