Donetsk, Nov 12 - DAN. The Donbass Post state enterprise will issue an illustrated envelope and a stamp commemorating Leonid Brezhnev, a Soviet politician who personified a whole epoch in the history of the USSR, the company press service told the Donetsk News Agency.
“We’ve begun to work on the stamp which will wrap up the Great Personalities series devoted to Soviet leaders. The miniature sheet, envelope and stamp will be released on December 19 to mark Leonid I.Brezhnev’s birthdate,” a Donbass Post representative said.
The press service said that the miniature sheet would feature eight Brezhnev portrait stamps against the red banner background, and six coupons showing landmark events in the Soviet leader’s life. The coupons will be decorated with images of Soviet painters’ artworks. No more details are available. Donbass Post will release a limited amount of envelopes and stamps priced at 39 and 12 roubles, respectively.
Leonid Brezhnev (1906-1982) is a Soviet statesman who was the Communist Party leader for 18 years, from 1964 until is death in 1982. He was a World War II veteran and a participant in the Red Square parade on June 24, 1945. He was the only person in the Soviet Union to be awarded four Hero of the Soviet Union decorations. There are 117 Soviet and foreign states’ awards on his commendation list. The Brezhnev era is widely associated with the “golden age” in the history of the country from the point of view of standards of living and large industrial, infrastructure and research projects, with the armed forces at the peak of their power. Brezhnev was recognized as the best Soviet leader in the 20th century according to an opinion poll conducted by Levada Centre several years ago.
The first stamp of the Great Personalities series was devoted to Joseph Stalin, a revolutionary and politician. Donbass Post then put in circulation the stamp marking the 150th birthdate of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), the founder of the Soviet state.*jk
