Donetsk, Dec 21 — DAN. The construction of a water duct from the river Don to the Donetsk People’s Republic has been launched; it is expected to resolve the water supply problem of the DPR capital, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Wednesday.

“A 194-kilometer water duct from the river Don will assuredly provide Donetsk with water, ” the Russian Defense Ministry press service quoted Shoigu as saying at a meeting with senior military officials attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Army construction specialists have built more than 200 kilometers of new water lines for more than 1.5 million people in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics since the beginning of this year, ” he added.

The Republic has been experiencing shortages of drinking water due to hostilities since February. The situation remains very tense. Scheduled water supply was introduced in large cities. To resolve the problem, new water lines are being built and water trucking is arranged for the population. In November, plans were announced to build a water pipe from the Don to the DPR.*jk
