Donetsk, Aug 18 — DAN. Nine civilians have been killed and about 50 have been wounded in Svetlodarsk in Ukrainian artillery attacks since the town was liberated in May, town administration head Maxim Kozlovsky told the Donetsk News Agency on Thursday.

“Some 50 people have been hurt and nine have been killed, ” Kozlovsky said.

Damage was caused to the Donbass Hotel which used to be property of the Uglegorsk thermal power plan and a restaurant; seven apartment buildings need major renovation. Many buildings have to replace windows, he added.

On Thursday morning, Kiev gunmen opened aimed fire at Svetlodarsk where residents had queued up for drinking water. Kozlovsky said that 30 to 40 people had gathered at the water point at the time. Four people were killed and 15 were wounded in the artillery attack.

Svetlodarsk is located 18 kilometers north of Debaltsevo. It was founded in 1968. The town accommodates the Uglegorskaya thermal power plant, one of the largest in Europe. On April 29, 2014, a rally in the town adopted a resolution in support of the Donetsk People’s Republic independence referendum. Ukrainian troops occupied the town in the summer of 2014. The Russian coalition liberated the town in late May 2022. Svetlodarsk was included in the Debaltsevo zone of responsibility.*jk
