Donetsk, Jul 4 — DAN. Donetsk Republican Local History Museum (DRKM) personnel will take part in the excavation for artefacts of the Khazar Khaganate capital, a Museum representative told the Donetsk News Agency.

“Astrakhan archaeologists lead the research in the lower reaches of the Volga area, ” DRKM Research Unit Director Anna Petukh said. “Specialists from Kazan, Belgogord and Donetsk are joining the project. By the way, DRKM researchers Eduard Kravchenko and Galina Chepita took part in the expedition in 2021-2022.” 

In 2021, archaeologists found numerous artefacts in the Astrakhan village Barany Bugor, which belonged to Khazar Khaganate, a powerful medieval state that stretched from the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea in the 8th century. Scientists are looking for Itil, the capital of the ancient kingdom.

Reports on Monday said that a DRKM researcher would join a dig at ancient hills in the Rostov region.*jk
